A Sustainable Icon Resurfaces

20 March 2025

At Thinking Works, designing products that stand the test of time has always been at the heart of our business. Our latest discovery is proof of that commitment – an original, fully functional Ergoflex height adjustable desk from the 1990s, found at an industrial site undergoing redevelopment.

FF&3 were appointed by Goodman to undertake a waste and recovery audit in line with their objectives to maximise circular economy outcomes in deconstruction. During the recovery effort, FF&3 identified the 35-year-old desk as a Thinking Works original and ensured its safe return to our heritage collection. As part of a sustainable initiative to repurpose items from the site, this robust Ergoflex desk has endured decades of use and remains in perfect working condition.

The Ergoflex was one of our earliest desk models. Thinking Works was founded as Ergonomic Equipment in 1984 by John Edwin Grout, a pioneering robotics engineer. He designed and patented Australia’s first height-adjustable desk, initially supplying government departments under federal and state contracts. In 1989, the design evolved into the Ergoflex model – the desk we rediscovered.

A true testament to designing for circularity.
